Unlocked cell phones was given something of a major endorsement from the courts in recent times, with a ruling that seeking to unlock one’s own device is entirely permissible. Cellular service providers traditionally lock the handsets they supply to their subscribers so that those mobile phones will only run using that provider’s network. This has the effect of rendering cell phones useless whenever consumers wish to switch carriers. A veritable cottage industry has grown around those consumers wishing to take their phones with them to a different carrier, and the courts just gave the technique its blessings – with one fatal caveat: While unlocking phones is authorized, the means to achieve it is not!
